2017 Toyota RAV4 That Would Not Accelerate — P2118, Fixed Without a Throttle Body
The RAV4 started fine but would not respond to the gas pedal. The code pointed at the throttle system — testing found a blown fuse instead of a bad throttle body.
October 2026 · Las Vegas, NV
This 2017 Toyota RAV4 in Las Vegas had a scary symptom: the engine ran, but pressing the accelerator did almost nothing. It is the kind of fault that often gets quoted as a replacement throttle body — an expensive guess if nobody tests the circuit first.
AutoCode scanned the vehicle and found code P2118, which covers the throttle actuator control motor current range/performance — the ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System). A code names the system to test; it does not name the failed part.
What We Found
Testing the ETCS circuit instead of trusting the code led straight to the cause: the ETCS fuse was blown, cutting power to the throttle actuator. No power, no throttle response — the computer was reporting a circuit that simply had no feed.
- Code P2118 stored — throttle actuator / ETCS circuit
- ETCS fuse found blown — no power to the throttle actuator
- Circuit tested before any part was quoted
The Result
AutoCode replaced the blown ETCS fuse and performed the throttle body relearn so the computer could re-learn the throttle's positions. The RAV4 accelerated normally again — no throttle body replacement, no parts cannon.
- ETCS fuse replaced
- Throttle body relearn completed
- Normal acceleration restored and verified
The Lesson
A 'bad throttle body' quote can turn out to be a fuse and a relearn — but only if someone tests the circuit. Codes point at systems, not parts; measuring power, ground and signal is what separates a diagnosis from a guess.
